This is water that has been used for domestic and industrial purposes and is discharged to a sewer. The wastewater from our homes is called domestic sewage; wastewater from industry is called industrial or trade waste (in England and Australia). The dirt or contaminants in wastewater consist of organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, microorganisms, and fine particles that are suspended in the water. Domestic sewage contains human waste, along with many of our everyday products including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and other substances found in various consumer products. When we wash our bodies, our clothes, and our dishes, the products that we wash off and the products that we wash with end up in the water that goes down the drain to the wastewater treatment plant.
