A nutrient that is essential for all forms of life. In its common form, phosphate, it is readily available to plants. Phosphorus in wastewater is also a breakdown product of organic chemicals in plant and animal matter, and can also come from detergents. In the United States, some states and regions have bans on phosphorus in laundry and other detergents.
