The natural movement (diffusion) of water through a membrane from a dilute solution to one that has a higher salt concentration, and continues until reaching a state of equilibrium. Osmosis is the process by which water flows into and out of cells in the human body and by which water enters a tree through roots and travels upward into the leaves.
