A nutrient that is essential for all living things. The air we breathe is 79 percent nitrogen, and it is contained in many complex organic compounds, both natural and synthetic, and in inorganic compounds. Ammonia, nitrate, and urea are forms readily available to living plants. The nitrogen compounds found in wastewater are mostly byproducts resulting from the breakdown of plant and animal proteins.
