Groundwater is the water trapped in a layer of porous underground rock, sand, or sediment (called an aquifer) that holds water like a sponge. Groundwater quality can be affected by geological characteristics of the aquifer or saltwater intrusion. Groundwater that is too salty is called brackish water. In some cases, groundwater may not need to be treated before used as drinking water.
